LESSON 85: U.S. ARMED FORCES OPERATIONS AND CASUALTIES: 1898-2014

There have been wars, great and small, some needed, some not, it is unknown on how many allies were lost, no less the native population from our response or the enemy’s. You can research which ever conflict or war that you want to get more information.

**U.S. Army Air Corps, prior to 1947. The U.S. Air Force was not a separate military branch until 1947. The Navy and Marines had their aviators also.

Military              There maybe no separation between Army, Navy, or Marine Corps.
Operation/ Casualty
Incident Types are KIA, Non-Hostile Killed, WIA, POW, MIA and Total #.

Spanish-American War, April to December 1898, Freed Cuba, Phillippines, Puerto Rico from the Spanish. KIA: Army 369; Navy: 10; USMC: 6=Total KIA: 385. WIA Total 1662.

Boxer Rebellion-China, In the late 19th Century there was a period of no growth and the rebellions left tens of millions dead. From 1898-1901 the “Society of Righteous Harmony Society” or “Yihetuan” or “Boxers” in English sought no further foreign or Christian interest in China. The Foreign Legations were attacked in Shanghai, and the alliance with the U.S., Britain, Japan, Russia, France, and others fortified the Legations and went after the Boxers and gained a victory. Killed were over 50.

There is a 1966 movie that might half-way explain the feelings of the period called “Sand Pebbles”. Actors are Steve McQueen, Richard Crenna, Candice Bergen, Mako and others. It was directed by Robert Wise. It takes place in 1926 China.

THE START OF THE COLD WAR (WWIII): Although no major war shots were fired between the U.S. and N.A.T.O. versus the U.S.S.R. and the Warsaw Pact or China; but, there were about 15 times that a DEFCON TWO was almost called due to nuclear alerts that took about 15 to 30 minutes on the various Hotlines that settled the miscommunications. Plus, there almost was one DEFCON ONE during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962 and the blockade stopped the alert.
